Deadman’s Gully Hike

For this hike we visit the old gold mining town of Stieglitz.  Located approximately 40 min from Geelong this small town has history dating back to 1835 when the von Stieglitz family settled on land on which gold was later found.   There are still some historic buildings left standing today including the old Courthouse where we will start our approximate 9km circuit from.

Leaving the Courthouse we will head into the Brisbane Ranges National Park along a dirt track.  The path is uneven and rocky in places.  We will head along until we reach Deadman’s Gully where we will pause and admire the beauty of the rocky Gully before we start our ascent up the Gully wall.  Taking due care as we head up we will walk close to the edge and admire the beautiful view.  From the top we continue along before we descend back across the creek before we take a steeper hill.  Walking single file we then head through the bush until we cross the main road.  We walk down a dirt road till we reach The Crossing Picnic Area and continue walking along this road until we reach the Burchell Trail and head back into the bush again. 

We then walk single file again through the National Park as we ascend up to the Pines Car Park before we walk through grassy field back through the township of Stieglitz passing some historic buildings as we go.

This hike should take approximately 2-3hrs to complete.

What to bring:

- Drinking water

- Rain coat/jacket (if required)

- Small backpack to carry everything in 

  Can be very cold here especially in winter so you may need to layer up.

Weather:

This walk should be able to proceed in most weather conditions.   However, if severe weather warning forecast this walk will need to be postponed.

ADVENTURE RATING:

YELLOW Traffic light - This walk is through the Brisbane Ranges National Park.  You will walk on uneven, rocky ground, over tree roots and dirt roads.  There is a rocky track that is situated close to the gully wall that you will ascend along with other hills along the way.  Remember only you can decide if this adventure is right for you.
